Abraham Lincoln's Last Words: 1 Peaceful Whisper That Changed History

Abraham Lincoln, the 16th President of the United States (1809–1865), was tragically assassinated on April 14, 1865, while attending a play at Ford’s Theatre. His final moments reveal two touching accounts of his last words.

Shortly before he was shot, Lincoln was speaking with his wife, Mary Todd Lincoln. They were enjoying the play, and Lincoln pointed to a humorous moment on stage, saying quietly to her:

“She won’t think anything about it.”

These were his final spoken words, expressing a sweet, private thought to his wife.

Earlier that evening, Lincoln and Mary Todd had a more profound conversation. He spoke about his dream of traveling after the end of the Civil War, sharing with her his deep wish to visit the Holy Land:

“We will visit the Holy Land and see those places hallowed by the footsteps of the Savior. There is no place I so much desire to see as Jerusalem.”

This poignant dream was left unfulfilled, but it gives us a glimpse into Lincoln’s heart and hopes at the very end of his life.
